Create and Send a Swedish E-Prescription

Clinics in Sweden can write e-prescriptions in Provet and send them to the Swedish eHealth Agency. The client can then collect the medicine at a pharmacy. Before you send an e-prescription, you sign in with BankID or Freja eID+.

If your clinic uses VETiSearch, see VETiSearch – E-Prescription Installation and Activation instead.

Before You Start

  • Swedish e-prescriptions must be enabled and set up for your clinic. For more information, see Set Up Swedish E-Prescriptions.

  • Only users with the veterinarian role can create e-prescriptions. Other users do not see the e-prescription buttons.

  • Your prescriber code and your Swedish personal identity number must be correct in your user details, in Prescriber ID and ID number. For more information, see Create and Manage User Accounts.

  • You need BankID or Freja eID+.

There are two workflows for adding an e-prescription: simplified and standard. The steps below are for the simplified workflow. The standard workflow has slightly different steps. For the differences, see Set Up Swedish E-Prescriptions.

Create an E-Prescription From a Consultation

On the new consultation page: in the E-prescriptions section, select Add E-prescription.

On the old consultation page: in the Treatment items section, go to E-prescriptions and select the plus button.

The Create E-prescription dialog opens. It has four parts: E-prescription details, Client details, Add items and Prescribed items.

Fill In the E-Prescription and Client Details

In E-prescription details:

  • Prescriber: the person signed in to Provet is selected automatically. You cannot change the prescriber. The person who sends the e-prescription must be the person who created the e-prescription.

  • Pharmacy: send the e-prescription to a specific pharmacy, or to the prescription mailbox. In the list, the prescription mailbox is called RECEPTBREVLÅDAN. All pharmacies can access the prescription mailbox, so the client can collect the medicine at any pharmacy.

  • Prescriber's comments: an optional comment of up to 35 characters.

In Client details, most fields are filled in automatically from the client details. Required fields are yellow. In ID type, select personal identity number, date of birth or organization number.

Note: If you send the e-prescription to the prescription mailbox, the client's personal identity number is required. If you only have the client's date of birth, select date of birth in ID type and enter the date of birth. Then select the pharmacy the client will use instead of the prescription mailbox.

Add Medicines to an E-Prescription

  1. In Add items, select the Add medicine tab. To add supplies, select the Add supply tab. To start from an earlier prescription, select the Previous prescriptions tab.

  2. In the search field, start typing. To narrow the search, use these filters:

    • Is marketed

    • All medicines or Only medicines in register

    • Approved or Non-approved

    • Human and vet. medicines or Vet. medicines only

  3. The results show the name, form and strength, whether the medicine is approved, and whether the medicine is a veterinary medicine. To see the full FASS information, select the medicine name. To add the medicine, select the green check mark on the right.

  4. In Instructions, enter the dosage instructions. To copy dosage information from FASS, select FASS. To use your clinic's own text, select Text templates. In Language, select the language of the e-prescription. The instructions can be up to 254 characters.

  5. Fill in the details:

    • Package size: the package size of the selected medicine

    • Number of packages: how many packages the prescription includes

    • Amount of dispenses: how many times the medicine can be collected on one prescription

    • Interval time value and Interval time unit: the time between dispenses, for example 1 day

    • Latest dispensing: the last date for the first dispensing

    • Valid until: how long the prescription is valid

    • Indication: whether the medicine is used for treatment, prevention or metaphylaxis, required for antimicrobial medicines

    • Patient identity type: individual, group or herd

    • Patients and Species: the patients and the species the prescription is for

  6. Optional: to add a withdrawal period, select Withdrawal period, select the type and enter the duration. If the withdrawal period is until further notice, leave the duration at 0.

  7. Select the check mark to save the medicine.

Edit or Delete Prescribed Medicines

The medicines on the e-prescription show under Prescribed items. To change a medicine, select the pen button. To delete a medicine, select the delete button. An e-prescription must have at least one medicine or supply, so you cannot delete the last one. If you added the wrong medicine, add the correct medicine first. Then delete the wrong medicine.

Send an E-Prescription

  1. Select Save to save the e-prescription as a draft, or select Save and send to send the e-prescription now. If a required field is empty, the field name turns red. Fill in the field and select Save and send again.

  2. A sign-in window opens. The window is from the e-identitet service and is always in Swedish. Select BankID or Freja eID+, then sign in as described in the next sections.

After you sign in, the window closes and Provet shows Sending E-prescription. Provet sends the e-prescription. This usually takes a few seconds. After you send an e-prescription, you cannot change the e-prescription.

Your sign-in is valid for 7 hours. During this time, you can send more e-prescriptions without signing in again.

If you cancel the sign-in or the sign-in fails, Provet saves the e-prescription. To try again, select Save and send.

Note: If the sign-in window does not open, your browser may block pop-up windows. Allow pop-up windows for Provet, then select Save and send again.

Sign In With BankID to Send an E-Prescription

  1. In the sign-in window, select BankID.

  2. Open the BankID app on your phone and scan the QR code. If you have BankID on this computer, select Öppna BankID på denna enhet instead. You have 5 minutes.

  3. In the BankID app, enter your security code and select Identifiera or Skriv under.

Provet sends the e-prescription.

Sign In With Freja eID+ to Send an E-Prescription

  1. In the sign-in window, select Freja eID+.

  2. Open the Freja app on your phone and scan the QR code. You can also enter your personal identity number in Ange personnummer and select Logga in.

  3. In the Freja app, enter your PIN or approve the sign-in.

Provet sends the e-prescription.

Check the E-Prescription Status

On the new consultation page, each e-prescription shows as a card. The card shows the status, for example Draft or Accepted. The card also shows the date, the prescriber and the medicines. Accepted means that the Swedish eHealth Agency has accepted the e-prescription. To edit a draft, select the pen button on the card. To delete a draft, select the delete button. You can only view a sent e-prescription.

On the old consultation page, each e-prescription shows in a table with its Status. To view the details, select the eye button.

If SMS notification is enabled, the client gets a text message when the e-prescription is ready to collect. If the client has no phone number, the message is sent by email. You can change the message text in the e-prescription settings. For more information, see Set Up Swedish E-Prescriptions.

If default items for e-prescriptions are enabled in the settings, Provet adds them to the consultation automatically. Clinics usually use default items to charge a prescription fee.

Create an E-Prescription Without a Consultation

To create e-prescriptions without a consultation, select Allow creating E-prescriptions as counter sales without consultation in the e-prescription settings. You can then create e-prescriptions from the client page and the patient page. The patient page shows only that patient's e-prescriptions. The client page shows the e-prescriptions for all the client's animals.

The steps are the same as from a consultation. There is one extra check box above the save buttons. If you select this check box, Provet creates a counter sale invoice for the client when you send the e-prescription. The invoice includes the fee from the settings.

View All E-Prescriptions

To see all e-prescriptions created in Provet, go to Patient care > E-prescriptions. You can search and filter the list.

Prescribe a Licensed Medicine

  1. Select the Non-approved filter.

  2. Select Licensläkemedel e-förskrivning.

  3. Fill in the required fields, for example the preparation name, strength and amount.

  4. Before you continue, submit the license justification in KLAS, the Swedish eHealth Agency's web tool.

  5. In the license number field, enter the number of the approved license.

  6. Send the e-prescription. For the steps, see Send an E-Prescription.

Prescribe an Extemporaneous Preparation

Many extemporaneous preparations are available as APL items. Select the Non-approved and Human and vet. medicines filters. Then search for the substance name, or type "APL" and browse the list.

If you cannot find the right substance or preparation, write your own preparation. In the search field, type "extempore" or the ATC code. Select the result, then write the full recipe for the preparation in Instructions. Send the e-prescription. For the steps, see Send an E-Prescription.

Common E-Prescription Errors

  • The prescriber's Prescriber ID is missing or wrong in the user details.

  • The prescriber's ID number (Swedish personal identity number) is missing or wrong in the user details.

  • The person who sends the e-prescription is not the person who created the e-prescription.

  • No pharmacy is selected.

  • The client's personal identity number is missing.

  • The browser blocks the sign-in window.
